It's interesting that the season of gratitude is followed by the season of giving because you need to first appreciate before you can share that appreciation! It's been a while since we did a post but wanted to keep this fresh, so here are some crazy updates:

We've collected and donated over $1,000 to some great causes like Stand Proud, The Farm Sanctuary, and Survivors of Tortuere, International!
We've added new charities to our roster such as Krochet Kids and the Reciprocity Foundation
We've had one guest badge since the summer, and have had a great suggestion that lead to a three badge series about the Three Jewels
We've instituted the #mettabomb hashtag on Twitter to facilitate Tweeters to express a new type of respect, support, and praise. Check out our special #mettabomb page and accompanying badge!
Today, we just donated $300 to the American Himalayan Foundation
BuddhaBadges took the show on the road to Buddha For You to help with the Dharma Bum Kids program run by David Viafora. We talked about generosity and dana to about 22 kids ranging from 6 to 11 and had them design and make their own badges about giving. See the pics below!

Fear of Impermanence

So many aspects of the Buddhist belief system hinge on the ideas of Shunyata and Anicca: Emptiness and Impermanence. Emptiness, actually, can be seen as being an inherent element of Impermanence, for that which is made of a correlation of other things will one day fall apart, and thusly are impermanent and Empty of infinite individualism and expectation.

So, as we have been watching the purchases of badges go by we've noticed that no one is buying up these amazing little art-experiments that we happily yet accidentally devised while making badges for the masses. Are we seeing an uncertainty in the unknown or, worse, a fear of impermanence itself?

Either way, we hope it doesn't matter, as we serenade your eyes and minds with shots of these one-of-a-kind artistic expressions of change and transformation, juxtaposed with commentary and sutra on Anicca:

A corporeal phenomenon, a feeling, a perception, a mental formation, a consciousness, which is permanent and persistent, eternal and not subject to change, such a thing the wise men in this world do not recognize; and I also say that there is no such thing. - Buddha Shakyamuni

Whatever is subject to origination ("samudaya") is subject to cessation ("nirodha") - (MN 56)

Impermanence is intimately associated with the doctrine of anatta, according to which things have no fixed nature, essence, or self. For example, in Mahayana Buddhism, because all phenomena are impermanent, and in a state of flux, they are understood to be empty of an intrinsic self (shunyata). - O'Brien

Impermanent are all component things, They arise and cease, that is their nature: They come into being and pass away, Release from them is bliss supreme. - (DN 16)

There is no static being, no unchanging substratum. Change, movement, is Lord of the Universe. Everything is in a state of becoming, of continual flux. You cannot step twice into the same river; for fresh waters are ever flowing in upon you. - Heraclitus

Spring Update

It's been a while since a post, but we’ve been busy at the Dharma Bum Temple every Monday cranking out the badges! We also have been able to donate to some great causes from January through March... here's a run down:

Lotus Outreach International - Raised & Donated: $300 in January
The Karuna Center for Peacebuilding - Raised & Donated: $370 in February
We hosted a Special Effort Drive for the Tzu Chi Foundation's Japan Relief Fund - Raised & Donated: $400 in March

We’ve been very lucky to have taken part in the Buddha-For-You Pilgrimage as thy opened up at their newest location in San Diego at 6145 El Cajon Blvd near SDSU! So very happy to represent and present a small thank you to Jeff and Maggie, the owners, for their amazing work for the benefit of all. The present was made possible by the amazing Maitri Griha Project in Germany.

It's been a great year for BuddhaBadges! So very thankful for all of the wonderful support that's been received from those who've donated, followers and friends of Twitter and Facebook, and of course the amazingly wonderful volunteerism of the Dharma Bum Temple! To kick off this new year, how about three new badges!

Ghosananda
Bhante Maha Ghosananda was known as the “Ghandi of Cambodia” and spent almost the entirety of his 70-plus years on this planet working peacefully, tenaciously, and without hesitation to spread the Dharma and bring order, aid, and freedom to Cambodians and peoples worldwide. He accomplished these awesome tasks with a constant smile and a light in his eyes that inspired millions... all while handing out small prints of the Metta Sutta wherever he went. We‘ve depicted him here, on top of the Sutta in Pali. We thank The Liberate Life Project for reminding us of such a great person.

Unreal
The amazing contemporary Buddhist thinker and teacher Andrew Olendzki wrote about a phrase the Buddha used to describe our experience: “Abhutaparikalpo’sti” which roughly means “Unreal Imagination Exists”. It reveals to us that although this experience may be made up of photons and atoms entering our senses and playing upon the perceptive parts of our creative minds, “now” may really not be what you think it is, but it is still really happening.

Amoghasiddhi
Amoghasiddhi is one of the five principle Meditation Buddhas whose sepcific interest is in the overcoming of fear and the realization of accomplishment. Hence this badge—consisting of his symbols the Abhya Mudra, the Double Dorje and the mighty Garuda—each telling us that to be “Fearless” we must “Fear Less”.

Twelve months ago this day BuddhaBadges opened it's simple virtual doors to the internet and the world at large to do one thing: make badges and donate the money. That's two things, yes, but they work together very nicely, don't they?

Here's some fun facts from the first year:

BuddhaBadges has sent over 1500 BuddhaBadges across the globe.
Meaning over $1500 has been donated to charities!
Over the last year BuddhaBadges has generated over 40 Badge designs, with 2 being donated from artists.
Almost 350 people own BuddhaBadges as we speak! More if they've been gifted to others.
Badges have been sent to such amazing locales as Austrailia, Brazil, Switzerland, Canada, Thailand, and The Netherlands.
Eleven out of twenty-three charities have been donated to, but we want more! Send in suggestions!
The Metta Badge is the best selling badge.
All BuddhaBadges are comprised of Red, Black, or White.
So far BuddhaBadges has done all this by reaching people through Facebook, Twitter, email and word-of-mouth!

BuddhaBadges Vs. Breast Cancer!

Something different happened one day during the normal BuddhaBadges making process: a page of badges came out pink. They lacked too much of one ink or absorbed too much of another; whatever they case may be, they were different. And, they were almost thrown away.

But then it dawned upon the mind: These Badges are special! They can have purpose!

Not more than a glance about is all it took for the relationship to arise between these compassionate—and now pink—icons and the month we are in—the month of Breast Cancer Awareness.

So we have an exclusive set of 48 Badges: 16 of Pink Chenrezig, 16 of Pink Lotus, and 16 of Pink Avalokita, each priced at $2.00 a piece. The extra funds raised will go to a reputable Breast Cancer Charity at the end of the month, suggestions are open!

BuddhaBadges Multiple Donation Day!

Today has been another great day at BuddhaBadges! Not only were we able to donate $300 to our charity for the month of August, The Buddhist Global Relief Fund, but we also sent out $100 to the Organization for Autism Research and $100 to the Doctors Without Borders Relief Efforts in Pakistan!

Much of the success of this month is attributed to the kindness and compassion of so many, it's almost mind-boggling to try and write them all out!

Many Thanks to Tricycle Magazine for their continued support and for their latest article on BuddhaBadges! The exposure has pushed this month beyond the limit!
Much Metta to Jack of Sweep the Dust, Push the Dirt for coming up with the idea of donating to the Organization for Autism Research! The Special Interest Badge concept is a great mini-vehicle and we already have another one this month!
Deep Bows to Emily Breder and everyone who wrote articles, blog posts, and tweets about what BuddhaBadges is trying to achieve and how others can pitch in!
Hundreds of Thank Yous to the Dharma Bum Temple for donating a few hours each week to getting these orders filled and out the door!
Utmost Appreciation to the Online Meditation Crew and in particular Alfonso, The KamikaZen for donating their energy, focus, and talents by offering the proceeds from their awesome T-shirts to Pakistan! BuddhaBadges was very happy to match and quadruple their dana!

Kodo

This impactful saying is yet another Special Mission Badge for a good cause, this time our focus is homlessness inspired by our friend Adam over at Fly Like a Crow. Homeless Kodo wandered around Japan a long time ago teaching the his style of Dharma and blazing his own path by embracing the transient and never staying in one home or temple. The sales of this badge will go directly to FareStart, a culinary job training and placement program for homeless and disadvantaged individuals ready to settle down.

Punk-O-Thai

Now that is some Punk-Rock-N-Roll Enlightened One right there! Just could never get over the idea that Thai Buddha statues from the front looked like they all had killer mohawks, so this Badge makes that Punk dream a reality! OM! OM! OM! OM!

Greatful

Did you notice the misspelling there? Clever huh? You know what? You are great. "Oh Most Nobly Born," as so many sutras begin, you should be grateful of your greatness. Living a life of gratitude for being born as a human being is a noble life indeed. And for a life like that, you can be truly "greatful".

Three New Badges and July's Donation Sent!

This fine Monday the 2nd of August is a fine Monday the 2nd of August indeed as BuddhaBadges has had an exciting morning!

Three New Badges were added to the roster...

OMtism is a Special Mission Badge focused on awareness and raising funds for Autism research.Any and all donations raised from this Badge will go directly to the Organization for Autism Research.

The Fire Mala Badge is a special guest artist design created by Ed Cross, for which BuddhaBadges is absolutely grateful! Ed was and amazing artist to work with and BuddhaBadges welcomes more artists and input!

And the third, Thick-n-Thin, is a mash-up of the chubby Hotei and the emaciated Shakymuni... cuz, ya know, skeletons are punk. This one illustrates the varieties and styles a Path can take.

Just sent off the $100 donation to The Children's Shelter Foundation - Chiang Mai, Thailand...

The DharmaBum For Life Program has signed up for another few weeks...

A very nice message came our way from the Dharma Bum Life Program that one of the participants posted on the DBLP blog, and I have to admit it brought a tear to the eye, let's just say that. Here goes:

Living Practice + Buddha Badges

Helping out with [the BuddhaBadge's] project was inspiring. Such a creative way of weaving Dharma into everyday life and for the benefit of others. Working for the sake of others, the “no trace” trace, adding another link to the chain of countless causes and effects as he explained, button making as meditation, really?----ingenious! Dharma expression. When I am present enough to catch glimpses of it, it’s an inspired sight. I think it’s dharma freestylin’ and winning the battle. One breath, one button, one break(samsara)beat at a time. The Buddha Badges experience showed me the creative, living quality of Dharma practice. It stretches me to release expectations, to open up to more possibilities for what Dharma practice looks like.

The makers of BuddhaBadges and DharmaDots are please to now bring you: ALTAR-BOT. Altar-Bot "was sent from the Future's Past to give the online Buddhist Community a place to anonymously post images of their altars and places they sit for future sitters to randomly enjoy!"

Basically it's just a little spot to keep an on-going user-generated photo log of some of the serenest places on the planet... your personal zendos! BuddhaBadges Meets The DharmaBums!

Last night, July 22nd, 2010, was a momentous occasion in BuddhaBadges history, for sure!

Through the graciousness and generosity of Jeff and Maggie of the Dharma Bum Temple in downtown San Diego, eight Dharma Bum Life participants sat with me for 2 hours and we talked good Buddha talk and laughed a good Buddha laugh as they donated their time to help make over 200 BuddhaBadges in one night! Not only that but they also sorted, prepared, and packaged them all while practicing, listening about, and talking on topics of dana, kshanti, and karuna! All of this months orders were filled (and basically blessed) yesterday by the Bums-in-training, and many more badges are now ready and lie in wait to be sent!

~~I'm sure more more pics will be rolling in as the day progresses~~, More pics are up now! Click to see! It was totally a real, authentic good time! We were really able to focus on the concepts of being an empty element of generosity and an invisible participant in the positive process. We passed around images and told stories of the people that BuddhaBadges has been able to donate to, and talked about Pratityasamutpada. In their own way, each proto-Dharma Bum listened to or instilled within an element of peace and practice as they each fulfilled their different yet equally important task. And in the end, we had an amazing steaming pile of BuddhaBadges, ready for mailing to hopefully spread some smiles.

Thanks to all of the DB4Life crew, to Jeff and Maggie of not only the Dharma Bum Temple, but also Buddha For You and The Meditation Initiative. These are all amazing people doing amazing things and BuddhaBadges is honored to have this little project even noticed by them, let alone to have them take part in the entire process.

Two New Casues, The Dharma Bums, and a Guest Artist

Two New Causes have been added to the roster lately: The BEST Program and Sprout Yoga. Both contacted me directly about being added to the list, which I was more than happy to do. If you know anyone that you think would be perfect for the BuddhaBadges Causes list, please feel free to contact me.

Thursday, July 22nd will be the first of what may be many sessions with the Dharma Bum Life Summer Program folks as we'll sit around, talk about dana, kshanti, and good stuff like that while making BuddhaBadges, filling orders, and getting packages ready for mailing. This is going to be really, really amazing. I will keep you all posted on how awesome it really is. Pics, for sure!

Also, this is cool: Artist and Designer Ed Cross contacted us to see if he could donate a design for a badge to include among the next three that are up! The ideas he has are already awesome, so stay tuned first week of August to see what he's come up with!
